Knitted Toilet Cushion, 1863


Cockle-Shell Pattern for a Toilet Cushion

Materials - Messrs. Walter Evans and Co.'s Boar's Head Cotton, No 40; No 24 steel pins. Knitted with large pins and four-thread fleecy, it is a good pattern for a sofa pillow.

Cast on 9 stitches for each pattern; from seven to nine patterns are sufficient. Observe to knit every repeat of the pattern from the commencement of the each row.

1st Row - K (or knit) 2, cotton forward and K1 six times, bringing the cotton foward each time, K1; repeat.

2nd Row - P (or pearl) 2, K11, P2.

3rd Row - K 2 together, K11, K 2 together.

4th Row - P 2 together, P 9, P 2 together.

5th Row - K 2 together, K7, K 2 together.

6th Row - Pearl the whole row. Repeat from the beginning.

A variety may be made in this pattern by putting the cotton twice round the pin, bringing it out at the back.


Knitted Lace for Trimming the Toilet Cushion, or Any Other Purpose

Materials - Messrs. Walter Evans and Co.'s Boar's Head Cotton No.2, or their No.12 four-thread knitting cotton; two bone pins, measuring a half-an-inch round.

Foundation - Cast on 13 stitches, K a plain row.

1st Row - K 3, cotton forward, K 3 together, cotton forward, K 5, cotton twice round the pin and brough to the back, K 2 together.

2nd Row - Cotton forward, K 1, K 1 and P 1 in the loop that is twice round the pin thus: knit a stitch, slip half the loop off the pin, bring the cotton in front, pearl the remainder of the loop that is on the pin, put the cotton back; K 3, K 2 together, cotton forward, K 3, cotton foward, K 2 together, K 1.

3rd Row - K 3, cotton forward, K 2 together, K 2, cotton forward, K 2 together, K 2, cotton twice round the pin, coming out at the back; K 2 together, cotton twice round the pin again, K 2 together.

4th Row - K 1, K 1 and P 1 in the loop as in 2nd row, K1, K 1 and P 1 as before in the next loop, K 1, K 2 together, cotton forward, K 5, cotton forward, K 2 together, K 1. There are now 17 stitches on the pin.

5th Row - K 3, cotton forward, K 2 together, K 4, cotton forward, K 2 together, K 4, cotton forward, K 2 together.

6th Row - K 8, cotton forward, K 2 together, K 4, cotton forward, K 2 together, K1.

7th Row - K 3, cotton forward, K 2 together, K 1, K 2 together, cotton forward, K 4. Five stitches now remain on the pin. K 2, pull the first over the second, K the third, pull the second over the third and continue the same with all, only not dropping the last stitch, but knitting it from one pin to the other four times till there is a long knitted loop. Put it with the remainder of the stitches on the pin.

8th Row - K 6 of which the loop of the long knitted loop is one, cotton foward, K 2 together, K 2, cotton forward, K 2 together, K 1. 13 stitches are now on the pin.

Repeat from 1st Row.
