c1890 The petticoat from which our engraving is taken measures 7 inches in length; it is worked with an ounce of white Andalusian wool and a pair of No.11 bone knitting needles, and is exceedingly pretty for dolly. Commence by casting on 110 stitches for the whole width round the bottom of the petticoat. 1st Row - Knit plain. 2nd Row - Purl. 3rd Row - Plain. 4th Row - Slip 1, knit 1, * make 1, kni 1 , slip 1 , knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1 , make 1, knit 1 and repeat from * to the end of the row. 5th Row - Purl. Repeat the last two rows twice. 10th Row - Purl 4, purl 2 together, repeat the same and end with purl 2; now there are 92 stitches on the needle. 11th Row - Plain. 12th Row - Purl. 13th Row - Purl. 14th Row - Slip 1, knit 1, then make 1 and knit 2 together alternately to the end, which makes a line of holes, and still there are 92 stitches. Do 2 purl rows. Do 1 plain row, in which take 2 together twice, and so reduce to 90 stitches on the needle. Then 2 purl rows will finish the edge. With the 20th Row - The insertion begins - Knit 5, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1 and repeat the same to the end. 21st Row - Slip1, * knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1 , knit 1, purl 5, repeat from * and end with purl 4. 22nd Row - Knit 3, * purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit1, purl 1, knit 5, repeat from * and end with knit 2. 23rd Row - Purl 3, * knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 5, repeat from * and end with purl 2. 24th Row - Slip 1, * purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 5, repeat from * and end with knit 4. 25th Row - Purl 5, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1 and repeat the same to the end. 26th Row - Knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 5, purl 1, repeat the same to the end. 27th Row - Purl 1, knit 1, purl 5, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1 and repeat the same to the end. 28th Row - Knit 1, purl 1, knit 5, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1 and repeat the same to the end. This completes the insertion, and there are there are still 90 stitches on the needle. Do 2 purl rows. 1 plain row. 2 purl rows. 34th Row - Holes - Slip 1, knit 1, make 1 and knit 2 together alternately to the end. Do 2 purl rows. 1 plain row. 38th Row - Purl 6, * purl 2 together, purl 9, repeat from * and end with purl 2 together, purl 5; now the stitches are reduced to 82 on the needle. 39th Row - Purl. The border is now finished. For the upper part of the petticoat work a plain row and a purl row alternately for 36 rows, or for the length desired. Next Row - To decrease for the waist - Knit 1 and knit 2 together alternately, four times, knit 2; knit 2 together and knit 2 alternately, fourteen times; knit 2 together and knit 2 alternately, four times; now there are 60 stitches on the needle. Knit 9 plain rows for the waistband - buttonhole should be made at the end of the fourth of these rows. Cast off. Sew up the back of the petticoat leaving space for a placket. Put a button on the opposite end of the waistband. |
