Doll's Crocheted Coat & Hood, c.1918

Doll's Crocheted Coat & Hood, 1889

THE CAPED COAT (Pattern Incomplete)

Before making the coat and cape it is advisable to procure a paper pattern [not available] as a guide to the size and shape. The work must be begun in the front on the right side and is crocheted upon a foundation chain of the proper length.

1st Row - Miss the first stitch, 1double crochet in each of the others.

2nd Row - 1 chain, 1 double crochet in every stitch.

Every row is alike, the number of stitches being increased or decreased according to the slope and shape. To increase a row, make fresh chain at the beginning or end, to decrease, miss the requisite number of stitches. The left side, the sleeves and the two portions of the back are all made separately and sewn together afterwards. The cape is begun also from the right hand side of the front, is in two parts and is sewn to the frock, when these are finished.

The border along the lower edge is worked as follows:

1st Row - * Wool round the hook, take up one loop from the first stitch, wool round hook, pick up a loop from the second following stitch, draw the wool through all these loops together, 1 chain, repeat from *, always taking the first loop from the same stitch from which the previous one was taken.

2nd Row - Like the 1st, but the loops are picked up from the chain of this row.

3rd Row - Like the 2nd, but 1 picot (3 chain, single in the first) is worked into the thread of the next loop that was picked up instead of 1 chain; this row is continued round the front edges and neck of the paletot after this has been bordered with three rows of double crochet.

Along the lower edges of the cape and sleeves, crochet two rows like the 1st and 3rd above detailed.

THE HOOD

For the Hood, begin in the middle of the front with a foundation of 9 loosely made chain.

1st Row - Miss the three first stitches, * 5 treble in the fourth stitch, 1 double crochet in the next, repeat from * twice.

2nd Row - 3 chain, 4 treble in next double crochet, 1 double crochet in the last of the next 5 treble, 5 treble in the next double crochet, 1 double crochet in the last of the next shell, 5 treble, 1 double crochet.

3rd Row - 3 chain, 5 treble in the first double crochet, 1 double crochet in the treble before the next double crochet, * 6 treble in next double crochet, 1 double crochet in last stitch of next shell, repeat once from *.

4th Row - Like the 3rd, but increase by working 6 more treble into the first 3 chain of the last row.

5th Row - Like the 4th, but work 6 treble into the first treble of the preceding row and 7 instead of 6 treble.

6th - 15th Rows - Like the 5th row, but with no increase; in the last 6 rows, work 8 treble instead of 7, and at the beginning and end of the 14th and 15th rows crochet one shell less.

The curtain is begun along the upper edge upon a loose chain of 21 stitches. Work 9 rows of the same pattern without any increase or decrease, except as regards the number of treble in the shells, which in the first two rows have 5, in the next two 6, in the next two 7 and in the last three 8 stitches. Join the curtain to the hood and trim the front of the latter with a scalloped border worked as follows:

* 1 double crochet in the first double crochet, 1 chain, miss 2, 5 long double crochet divided each by 1 chain, miss 2; repeat from *, 1 double crochet in the next stitch. Work back into the same stitches, 2 chain, 1 double crochet four times, into the chain between the first 2 long double crochet, then 1 chain, 1 double crochet into the next double crochet, 1 chain; repeat from *. Crochet a ruche along the front edge upon a requisite number of chain:

1st Row - Miss the first 4 stitches, 1 long double crochet into next stitch, 1 chain, miss 1, 1 long double crochet

2nd Row - 4 chain, 1 long double crochet in next chain, 1 chain, fasten off.

3rd Row - Commence again and work 1 double crochet into the first of the 4 foundation stitches that were missed in 1st row, * 1 chain, 5 long double crochet with 1 chain between each, into the 1 chain that was left between the next 2 long double crochet, 1 chain, 1 double crochet into the next missed foundation stitch; repeat from *.

4th Row - 1 double crochet into the first double crochet of the preceding row and take up with it the lower loop of a stitch in the 1st row, 3 chain, 1 double crochet four times into the chain between the next 2 long double crochet, 3 chain; repeat from *.

5th Row - * 1 double crochet into the first double crochet of preceding row and at the same time take up the stitch below it in the 2nd row, 3 chain, 1 double crochet three times into the next 3 chain, 3 chain; repeat from *. Crochet 5 more rows on the middle 25 stitches of the 2nd row like these.

Sew the ruche to the hood and finish it with ribbon bows and strings with which to tie it on.

Please be careful when giving period toys to young children.
