Tudor Links
Mapping Tudor England On The Web

About This Site

What is Tudor Links? / How we choose our links / How to use Tudor Links / Contacting Us / Using websites for research / Disclaimer

So what is this place?
Tudor Links began as a personal list of favourite links and helpful information. People told us they too found it useful, so we expanded it to help anyone interested in finding out more about Tudor dynasty and the culture of their age. We aim to collect in one source the best and most informative sites we find pertaining to Britain between 1485 to 1603. The emphasis is on sixteenth century England, but we try to cover the whole of what is now the United Kingdom of Great Britain, between the late fifteenth and the early seventeenth centuries. To put it all in context we include links for other parts of the world. Our own articles are offline but we hope to get them on-line again soon.

What we've linked to is just a taster of the many sites on the web. And all those websites are a tiny fraction of the books, articles and unpublished research that writers and historians have been working on. Tudor Links is only a very humble cousin of all of those great works but we hope we will inspire you to learn more about the lives, work and world of sixteenth century Britons.

How we choose what links to include
The selection is arbitrary and entirely personal. It's only limited to the pages we've used ourselves or which have been recommended to us as containing any useful information. We are not paid either to list or recommend these sites. We do not charge anyone for linking to their site on Tudor Links and it costs us money to keep this place running. So you can be sure we have no hidden agenda in choosing the sites we do.

How to use this site
There are many sites to choose from, so we arranged them into sections by topic. If a site covers more than one of those topics, we try to enter it under each of the relevant topics so you don't miss anything. We also recommend sites which we personally like or know to be useful, and will eventually(!) add brief descriptions to the links so you won't waste time if you're in a hurry.

If you are researching a subject but cannot see it on this page, it is probably listed on one of the sub-pages. See which of the categories above seems most appropriate and visit that page.

If you are simply looking for a selection of the best basic Tudor-related sites, then please visit our Essential Sites Page but for more specialized information, see the categories in the menu on the top left-hand corner of the page.

There are loads of sites with Tudor information and even we can't list them all. But some of the sites we link to have excellent links pages of their own and it's easy to start exploring from there. So pick a category from the menu on the left and let the adventure begin!

Got a link we should add?
Do you know of any sites we should add? Are any of our links broken? Please contact us, stating the name of the site, the URL or web address, and a description of the contents of the site along with any other comments you'd like to add. And if you can, please try to mention 'Tudor Links' in the subject line. Tudor Links is not the biggest site in the world but we get AN AWFUL LOT of spam anyway.

Using Websites for Homework/Schoolwork
We do not undertake writing projects or research for you. Even if your teacher or professor allows you to look-up subjects online, they will still want you to do your own work. And remember it's getting easier and easier for them to find out if you just copied something from the internet. Remember too that not everything that's written online is true. If you're working on an important project always remember to corroborate (check) the facts before you use any information from the internet. For instance, Wikipedia is a great site but it's written by ordinary members of public so the quality of the research varies from article to article. A good rule of thumb in any history project you work on is to make sure your facts are backed up by at least three different sources. And that's especially important when using the internet as a research tool.

Disclaimer
Finally we'd like to remind you that inclusion of a link does not necessarily mean personal endorsement of that page or site by Tudor Links. Our comments and descriptions of links are our personal opinions only, and do not constitute recommendations of those sites or the facts and opinions contained therein. We created Tudor Links as a tool to help explore Tudor history online but it's only a starting-place. Whether you're looking-up facts, goods or services, you will have to do your own research.

Nor are we responsible for the content of the sites linked to on this page. Anyone can create a website these days and write whatever they want regardless of truth. Freedom of speech is a great privilege but it doesn't always make for accurate information! Although we will be vetting and recommending some sites, at the same we try to include everything relevant as a matter of policy, regardless of quality. We do this so you have more choice but it may mean that some of the information on the pages we've linked to is unreliable. Please bear that in mind in your research. The web is a great place. Use it wisely!

But most importantly of all,

Have Fun And Enjoy Your Visit!

P.S.  It's nothing to do with Tudor history, but if you're a period costume fan you may be interested in two great historical fashion sites we're hosting for now. One's an e-zine called The Ladies Treasury of Costume and Fashion. It has wonderful original resources and real patterns of Victorian to Edwardian costumes, all for free. Costumers, re-enactors and living historians might also want to visit Bazaar Patterns, who sell period patterns and books for historical sewing which have all been reproduced from antique or vintage originals.
